BEYOND DOWNTOWN SINGAPORE
Beyond the downtown area, Singapore still retains pockets of
greenery in between its sprawling new towns. Most rewarding are the
Bukit Timah Nature Reserve , and the excellent Singapore Zoological
Gardens , both in the north of the island. Dominating the eastern tip of
the island is Changi Airport and, beyond that, Changi Village , in whose
prison the Japanese interned Allied troops and civilians during World
War II. From Changi Point, it's possible to take a boat to picturesque
Pulau Ubin , a small island with echoes of pre-development Singapore.
Although western Singapore has developed into the manufacturing heart of
the state, it remains remarkably verdant, and is the location of
fascinating Jurong BirdPark and the garish theme park Haw Par Villa .
There are theme rides aplenty too on the island of Sentosa , just off
southern Singapore, as well as some nice beaches.
DOWNTOWN SINGAPORE
Ever since Sir Stamford Raffles first landed on its northern bank,
in 1819, the area around the Singapore River, which strikes into the
heart of the island from the island's south coast, has formed the hub of
Singapore. All of Singapore's central districts lie within a three-kilometre
radius of the mouth of the river - which makes Downtown Singapore an
extremely convenient place to tour.
